Rapid image processing pinpoints cricket action

A new visual aid which tracks cricket player positions on the field has been trialled successfully on national television.

Sky Sports featured Lincoln Ventures’ FielderView technology during its 20/20 cricket broadcasts this year, which enables viewers to keep track of all players on the field, without losing a close up view of batters on the pitch.

The system uses a high resolution digital camera to capture images of players from the field and a specialist software programme converts the images into a graphical representation of their movements on a corner of the screen simultaneously.

Lincoln Ventures research and development engineer, Kenji Irie, said more trials of FielderView at live matches are possible and its capabilities are being further developed.

Lincoln Ventures has already developed image processing applications for other sectors, including business and farming as well as other sports such as soccer.
