Sustainable land and water management requires an integrated approach with effective participation from all relevant scientific, regulatory and other stakeholder interests.
We are currently leading the Sustainable Groundwater Allocation Research programme funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology. A principal aim of this research is to develop a participatory and adaptive approach to water allocation decision-making that is appropriate to the New Zealand situation.
The Selwyn Water Allocation Liaison Group (SWALG) was established in 2004 to work with the research team on this programme. Progress is documented to enable transferability to other districts and resource management processes.
